Welcome to the Careers Page!

Garforth Academy is committed to providing excellent careers advice, guidance and information to all students in the Academy. The Careers Team consists of Head of Careers Lauren Llewellyn, Careers Coordinator Bhauna Mukhtar, and Careers Advisor Denise Kambani who are based in the 6th form Careers Office. The team’s aim is to ensure that careers provisions are accessible to students of all ages with all aspirations.

Students can access information on Careers by using www.unifrog.org. This fantastic online resource allows students to explore thousands of jobs based on their interests, strengths and subject choices. The platform enables research into what is needed (i.e. qualifications and skills) to work in each profession. Students can speak to Mrs Llewellyn or Mrs Mukhtar about how to sign in to use the platform.

Employability Sessions

We recently held employability sessions in the Lecture Theatre every Wednesday with special guest Susan Black from Michael Page Group. These sessions are to provide information on ‘how to make yourself employable’, discussing:

  • Communication & people skills
  • How to manage social media accounts
  • CV tips
  • Mock interview practice
  • What diffferent employers look for

Work Experience – Year 12 Students

Work Experience Week will take place Monday 4th July – Friday 8th July 2022. 

All year 12 students are expected to have found a suitable placement for work experience week.

What do I need to do?

  • Find a suitable placement
  • Take employer details to Mrs Mukhtar (Name of manager, phone number, email address & company address)
  • Pass the employer our email address and ask them to send a copy of their liability insurance- workexperience@garforthacademy.org.uk
  • Take home a consent form and bring it back once completed

We invite special guests in regularly to speak about different sectors and job roles, giving information on what skills/ qualities needed and how to apply. These talks are opportunities for students to be inspired and expand their networks.

LIFE (PSHCE)

Our careers department contribute towards Life curriculum from years 7-11 and sixth form. Content is appropriate to each year group and the options they have ahead of them, and develops career development and management skills such as: identifying and articulating their own skills and strengths, understanding the transferability of skills, researching opportunities, and application skills.

We have invited in some inspirational speakers and organisations such as Jonathan Lancaster, Newcastle University & Leeds Apprenticeship Hub to help out throughout the year.

These provide interview tips, CV building sessions, application advice and much more!

Careers Events

Throughout the year our careers team organise different events inviting external organisations into the Academy, including:

  • Universities
  • Colleges
  • Local Businesses
  • Apprenticeship Providers

These will be announced via our Twitter page and the Garforth Academy website.

We encourage our students to reflect on their skills, strengths, interests, and values and follow their curiosity through proactive research of job sectors. We facilitate and encourage students to undertake as many opportunities as possible to be inspired, again insight, develop skills, and build their network. Opportunities come in all shapes and size i.e. attending employer/education provider events at school, online industry insight events, attending open days at colleges and universities, and external careers fairs, undertaking work experience . All students are welcome to come and speak to a member of the team for advice and guidance with careers.

CEIAG

The CEIAG – (Careers Education Information Advice Guidance) provision in a Delta Academy has been designed to positively support you to acquire the educational, social and employability skills necessary for lifelong success in a diverse and changing world of work. Our Careers Programme is personalised to the academy in conjunction with our partners at Careers Inc

Careers Education and is provided though:

  • Subject Lessons, – Information and discussions in with a subject specific focus to help you make decisions about careers based on subject knowledge and transferable skills.
  • Tutorials, Assemblies & Life Lessons – Discussions and resources about the local market information, growth job sectors and
  • Step Up Days – Events such as employability days

Information, Advice & Guidance is provided through:

  • Careers Cafes & Careers Fairs – Employers, Colleges and Universities will visit the school on a regular basic to talk to you about their industry and how to train and qualify for role in that sector.
  • Careers Portal – You have access to our online Careers Portal.
  • Results Service – a team of advisers will be able to talk through you needs on results day to help you confirm your intended destination.
  • Qualified 1-2-1 Guidance – You also have access to 2 Level 7 qualified careers advisers (Mrs Llewellyn & Denise Kambani), who will provide confidential and impartial advice to students on the information they have received or to help guide students to make fully informed decisions.
    • Planning for the future – if you have a career idea but want to find out the best route for you or if you have no career ideas our advisers can help you create career ideas around your interests and skills.
    • GCSE & A Level Options – Choosing your options and what would best suit you.
    • Apprenticeships – Finding work or an apprenticeship, including job hunting techniques including mock interviews
    • Parents Evenings – Access to careers advisers in a variety of ways including individual meetings, drop-in sessions, enrichment activities, parents and option evenings and on results days
    • Technology – Information and updates will also be available on notice boards, plasma screens and the websites
