Duration: 2 years  

Awarding body: Construction Skills (CITB & VTCT)

This course is suitable for those working as site carpenters or those starting out in these roles, you will be required to have employment in place or be willing to seek employment, support in this area will be given. The entire programme of study takes two years to complete and successful completion of the Level 2 programme will enable you to gain industry recognised qualifications which will enhance your career opportunities.

What you will study

The Apprenticeship Framework consists of the three elements (NVQ, Diploma and Functional Skills) at Levels 2.

NVQ Level 2 Site Units include:

* Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace

* Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace

* Erecting Structural Carcassing Components in the Workplace

* Installing First Fixing Components in the Workplace

* Installing Second Fixing Components in the Workplace

* Maintaining Non-structural Carpentry Work in the Workplace

* Moving, Handling and Storing Resources in the Workplace

* Setting Up and Using Transportable Cutting and Shaping Machines in the Workplace

* Construction Skills Diploma, Levels 2 (Technical Certificates)

* Functional Skills in English and Maths to Level  1.

Maths and English (and sometimes IT) are key elements of apprenticeship programmes and if you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects you will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate levels.

Skills in Maths and English will support your apprenticeship programme, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

 

How you will learn

All vocational tuition is provided by industry specialists. You will combine study at Garforth Academy, using specialised equipment in spacious workshops, with on-the-job experience. At Garforth you will learn through practical and theory sessions with some self study using learning packages.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed by means of a number of unit knowledge tests or a final exam, and a series of practical assignments for the Diploma element of the course along with an exam for Functional Skills. This course is based on 50% theory element and 50% practical.

The NVQ element of the course is assessed against your submission of evidence from the workplace (known as Site Evidence).
