The duration of the course is one year
To start the course you must be employed in a relevant environment for a minimum of 30 hours per week, we encourage students to seek their own employment, but support and help can be provided. For the Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) you must have completed Level 2 Hairdressing or the Level 2 pre-apprenticeship programme. This apprenticeship programme will help you to develop advanced techniques to a specialist level and give your career that extra boost.
What you will study
To gain the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing you must complete the following
Creatively style and dress hair
Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques
Creatively colour and lighten hair
Provide client consultation services
Hair colour correction services
Contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of promotional activities
You will also be expected to work towards Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English at Level 2, depending on your existing achievements in these areas.
Maths and English (and sometimes IT) are key elements of apprenticeship programmes and if you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects you will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate levels.
Skills in Maths and English will support your apprenticeship programme, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.
How will I be assessed?
For the NVQ you will build up a portfolio, which is a collection of examples or evidence of your work that demonstrates your skills and ability, such as a work diary, photos, statements from your employer and colleagues and examples of completed tasks. Assessment consists of practical tasks, observations, oral questioning, written questions and written tests. Students will be required to bring in their own models for assessment.
The Functional Skills are assessed through online tests.
What could it lead to?
After achieving you will find that you have improved your full-time employment prospects and will be in an ideal situation to progress to such positions as senior hairstylist, demonstrator for product manufacturers, trainer, stylist on cruise liners and self-employment. Many learners progress onto management roles or university.
